I myself am not against gay marriage. I don't see the issue in two people who are in love wanting to be committed to each other for the rest of their lives, but I don't disrespect those with different opinions and I don't see why everyone has to make such a big deal out of little things.
All you see in the news anymore is that Bruce Jenner is changing genders, your favorite soap opera couple is getting a divorce, President Obama used a swear word. Everyone makes such a big deal out of little things that happen every day but since these people are "celebrities", they can't being anything but perfect without being written about. And the sad thing is, if they do tend to act good in public, they usually lose popularity because of it. It seems like to be noticed now a days, you have to be a so-called "sinner". Why is that?
What we find interesting now a days is the drama that fills the lives of our most beloved celebrities or political figures, but what about them? I get that they know what they are walking into when they decide to become more famous than before but they don't deserve to be trashed every time they take a step outside their house. They just want to show their talent or practice the profession that they love and in return they get punished. To be heard you have to be noticed and to be noticed now a days you have to be interesting and you don't find those type of people too often anymore that are famous for the good that they do for the country.
I admit to reading into these gossip articles but I wouldn't mind reading about those who save a family from a burning house or a soldier surprising his wife and new born baby when he comes home three months early.
These news reporters feed into other people's falls and by us reading into what they are saying, it only encourages this behavior. I believe that we should read less about other people's botox mishaps and more into the stories that can actually make a difference in our lives.
I really liked your blog this week! When I read your first paragraph, I was pretty shocked. The fact that Ted Cruz said he would only accept gay marriage if his daughters were gay "because of the interests of the audience around him." And then he claimed that he wasn't shaping his views to suit the audience's. I thought this was crazy and this is only one example of people making a huge deal out of something so simple. I too am not against gay marriage. I believe that if two people are in love, it doesn't matter what their gender is, they should be able to be happy no matter who they are. I agree with what you said about the celebrities. That is all we pay attention to now, and if they make one tiny mistake, that is all anyone will hear about for a week. Why focus on the small things that don't effect us? I also agree that all we find interesting is the drama that fills our favorite celebrity's life. I'll admit, I do allow a lot of my time to be consumed by celebrities, but I shouldn't. I really liked when you admitted to reading gossip articles, but then you went on to say that you wouldn't mind reading about those who save a family from a burning home, or a soldier surprising his wife. These are the things we should pay attention to, not the latest news of a celebrity. I also thought you ended your blog very well. You ended it with what we are doing now, which is reading about people's botox mishaps, and what we should be doing, which is reading stories that can make a difference in our lives.
ReplyDeleteLindsey, I completely agree with what you said in this post regarding the lives and opinions of celebrities and politicians. I was unaware of this incident involving Ted Cruz; however, I share the same beliefs and opinions as you and Cruz. The fact that Cruz said, "he isn't going to change his (opinions) to make others happy," speaks volumes for him as person. By saying that, he is showing he is honest with his words and what he says allowing him to build his ethos with his audience. Whether someone is for gays or not, should not be what people take from this. People need to realize that Cruz is an honest person who has his own opinions just like everybody else, and everybody is entitled to their own opinions. The fact that the media made a huge production out of this situation is typical, but it proves the point that they will only publish content that will spark a controversy amongst their audience. This speaks volumes against the media like Cruz stated, and it also speaks volumes for Cruz. I also agree that the media only publishes the bad that people do, and not the good. We are encouraged to read the newspaper, and to watch the news, and to stay up to date on the events occurring around us, but why would I want to watch when everything that gets reported to us is so depressing? The content that gets published is the same thing over and over again, and it seems that nobody ever does anything to help those same issues/events from occurring. Regarding the topic of Bruce Jenner, like you I am not against it if that is what is going to make him happy, but others should not criticize him for it. We are all humans, and we are all going to make mistakes, and we all deserve the right to be happy. If Jenner is going to be happier as a female, then he should make the change. We all only have one life and need to give ourselves every opportunity we can to make ourselves happy. The organization of your post was excellent. You started with a real issue, explained the issue, related it to other events occurring, and then tied in your own opinions, views, and beliefs to relate to the article and to make it more personal. The organization of your article added to the overall effect of getting your message across. It was very clear that you believe the lives of celebrities get criticized too often because they are easy targets, and that you believe everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but should not cause conflict with those who have a different opinion.
